Guys we have existing 7200 with 2 disk enclosure (i.e 3 enclosures in all) .The controller shelf is populated with 4 xSSD and 16 x HDD while the other 2 disk enclosures are populated with 2xSSD and 16 X HDD.
Now our plan is to add another shelf to make it 4 enclosures in all. then redistribute the SSDs to be 2 in each enclosure and rearrange the HDD in controller enclosure to fill the slots when the 2 xSSD are remove. The challenge and question is how do we deal with the SSD CPG, HDD CPgs,VV and Disks in order to achieve these move around?

As part of this we want to effectively fill any remaining slots on all the 4 enclosure with HDD . Thus at the end each enclosure will be populated with 2 x SSDs and 22 x HDD . All enclosure are SFF.

Please any guide on this will be appreciated.

Thanks.

There is a process, although it has been painful in the past for us. HP can evacuate the 2 drives you want to use and then once moved they will be re-added back to the CPG. They can not just do it like when replacing a drive as the system is not smart enough (unless they made changes recently) to figure out you are just moving a drive. Basically you are re-balancing the drives. We did this in a big way over 18 months ago when we added 4 trays to our V400. It was painful to get HP to figure this out, but we pushed and would up with a perfectly balanced array.

Not an ideal starting point really, but It's possible to do via HP services as hdtvguy said and it happens quite regularly for large scale migrations, upgrades etc. I'm not sure given the number of disks being relocated it's really worth the effort but it depends what you're looking to achieve from the move.

Going with 4 cages and a relocation could provide cage level for the SSD's, is that what you're looking for ? You could do cage with Raid 1 or Raid 5 2+1 today, but once you go cage you have to start buying disk to match 2 x the stripe size, If it's just for the aesthetics I probably wouldn't bother.
