Does anyone know if "setsysmgr restart" takes down the array? I'm wondering if we can execute this without a broad shutdown of our hosts...

It shouldn't, but it is a critical service so if the reason you are restarting it prevents it from starting, you have an issue.

I think support had to do this on one of our arrays recently, we'd lost SSH/SSMC access with sysmgr stuck and unable to remove stuck sessions.

We had limited monitoring obviously but they did ask multiple times if the array was in maintainance/scheduled downtime before they'd start. I suspect just to be sure in case things went bad.

We hadn't had any host issues but we did vmotion/down VMs to be safe.

I'm not sure if it was directly related to the sysmgr reset or not but the current master node did reboot while they were working on things (maybe just to clean stuff up, if done seperatly).

So I'd certainly be careful if doing this on your own.

What's the worst thing that could happen when you're doing this on your own?

It doesn't come back online and HPE tells us to take our out-of-support array to the beach for glass manufacturing.

Probably not that bad, but if sysmgr fails to start again and you don't get any help you probably need to power cycle it. I can't see any reason for sysmgr restart to damage anything, so unless there is a latent hardware issue just waiting for a power cycle to appear you should be "good".
