Hi Guys,

Problems with my cache batteries in my hp 3par 10400.

Support company technicians have tried to switch already 2 times and can't change, because says the batteries are expired. Does anyone know the command to execute to solve this problem; and this batteries is Degraded, not Failed, in attach.

Do a showbattery to display the issue.

At some 3PAR OS levels I think you needed to read off the expire date from the physical battery and set it using setbattery command.

These batteries only have a 3 1/2 years life time and should never be left on a shelf for more than 12 months before being used. Using expired batteries has a risk of data integrity in case of power loss as these batteries are responsible for keeping the nodes up to destage any data in the write cache to a local disk on the node.

Take a note of the new battery expiry date then logon to the array Service Processor web-page and use the guided maintenance procedure (under the Support/Guided Maintenance option) there for battery module replacement (it will step you through the process in great detail with pictures). There are a few stages so pay attention to the instructions and don't just hit next, next, next. Some stages take a while so be patient with the web-page load times. :)

From memory the basic process puts the battery in replace mode (changes the LED colour to blue I think so you can pick the right one), you take out the old one, put in the new one then check if the showbattery has the new expiry date okay. If it hasn't read it automatically you can set it manually. It will then charge (takes several hours depending on level) and may run a self test, after which it should return to a normal state.

Do the batteries in newer 3PARs not have expiration dates ?
Show battery on the arrays here says "n/a" for expiration date.

All batteries expire eventually. :)

Our newest (9000 series) arrays show the expiry date but our 8000 series ones don't display it.
Our previous F, T and V/10000 models all had them though.

Looking at the service guide for the 8000 the battery is within the PSU so you have to remove the PSU to see/replace the battery. I'm guessing it's just failing them based on current levels rather then the preemptive expiry that's also used in the bigger arrays.
