Post subject:  3PAR 3.3.1 low efficiency compress

Hello,

I have this version: 3.3.1.410 (MU2)+P32,P40,P41,P45,P51,P52,P57
It is 8200 model.

After upgrade I gradually move data from old thin VV to new DECO volumes. It is Vmware with vmfs6 as hosts. There is one big VM (mail server), 10TB, Centos 6, xfs. All data is text files (email messages). My problem is, that I dont have any compression on DECO volume after I move part of this VM (many little vmdks - in guest os join to raid0 with lvm). But when I try lz4 compression on some bigger folder in VM directly, so I have about -13% compression. (From ~10G to ~9,7G).

What is wrong? After I will done with all vmotion on this vmdks I will run defrag on xfs. Can be this problem? Interesting is that one vmdk 300GB is 25GB now in 3par -but only this one for now and no compression only compaction. Others are about 450G used from 500G vmdk).

Thanks

Pavel

Sorry for my english :)

The 3PAR probably decided that the data was not compressing enough to be worth the overhead so didn't bother.

The 3PAR will have a compression algorithm that is biased towards performance .. it is block I/O afterall, while it might be nice to have super duper compression the latency impact could impact the host OS/database (especially if you try servicing dozens of hosts). LZ4 is fast, but probably not fast enough to satisfy what an OS is expecting if an array impremented it.
