Post subject:  Swap VVOL and CPG

Hi all,

New to the storage game and trying to get my head around vvols, VMware and 3Par.

At the moment we have a number of VMs using a VVOL which is working fine, one thing that does look a bit odd is the CPG that the VM is using for its swap file.

Id Name Prov Type UsrCPG SnpCPG
62 cfg-EDI99911-aba48c31 tpvv base FC_RAID6_AO1 --
63 dat-EDI99911-c1d6dd6a tpvv base FC_RAID6_AO1 --
64 swp-EDI99911-ed837b69 full base FC_r5 --

As you can see from the above the VMs swap file is using a different UsrCPG than the config and data file.
I have gone through all the settings of the VVOL on 3Par and VMWare and not able to see what CPG the swap file should be using. Ideally I would like the Swap file to use the same CPG as the rest of the files.

Hope this all makes sense

Thanks

If my vvol testing memory serves me right. A CPG is mapped to a storage container (or vice versa) which is presented to Vmware. If you try and storage vMotion the VM away from the storage container and back I'm guessing it might fix it.

Hi MammaGutt,

I have tried moving a VM about the storage locally and migrating it to a different storage cluster, still the same result.

I am also questioning, should I even have swap files on the 3Par, the hosts in the cluster have disk space that I could utilise. Something I am investigating further.
