We have a 3PAR 8200 and are looking to add some SFF shelves. The current shelves are full with the layout:

First twelve slots - SAS disks
Second twelve slots - SSD disks

When we get new SFF shelves we wish to add SSD disks only at this stage.

I would like to keep the SSD layout balanced across all cages and so add SSD to the last twelve slots only. Hopefully when there is more budget we can add more SAS disks to the first 12 slots at a later stage.

My question is will this work with disks only in the last 12 slots, at least in the short term. Since the best practice says disks must be loaded left to right

Thanks

As you say they need to be loaded from the left, it may well work but it isn't supported and isn't actually providing any more balance than following the best practices would. That is unless your only interested in things looking more aesthetically pleasing.
