Hi
I have the need to rebuild our existing Peer Persistence Quroum Witness vm. It's currently on VMware and the 3PARs are running 3.2.2

Can this be done without interruption to the RCGs or will these need to be stopped?

Am I best to build a new one with a different hostname and IP address and then to somehow reconfigure the 3PARs to use this, or is the better approach to shutdown the existing one and rebuild the new one with the same identity? If I do it this way will the 3PARs need any configuration changes.

thanks

Either will probably work, just stop the witness service on the arrays, either remove the existing witness and create new one pointing at the new IP or rebuild/move with the old IP and start the witness service again.

We tend to build a new one for new witness version on a new IP and then stop/remove/create/start on the arrays to point at it. Just takes a minute or two to settle.

Below are the commands from my reminder notes. :)

Code:
setrcopytarget witness check <IP of Quorum Witness>

setrcopytarget witness create <IP of Quorum Witness> <target_name>

showrcopy -qw targets

setrcopytarget witness start <target_name>

setrcopytarget witness start –remote <target_name>

setrcopytarget witness stop <target_name>

setrcopytarget witness remove <target_name>

Thanks for the info - I think I'll take the same approach and deploy a new QW with it's own identity.
Thanks also for the commands - I assume I will need to change the order of the commands you've listed as I'll need to stop and remove the old QW before I configure the new QW?

Is the following correct

Deploy the new QW virtual machine with it's own network identity

#setrcopytarget witness stop <target_name>
#setrcopytarget witness stop -remote <target_name>

#setrcopytarget witness remove <target_name>
#setrcopytarget witness remove -remote <target_name>

#setrcopytarget witness create <IP of Quorum Witness> <target_name>
#setrcopytarget witness create <IP of Quorum Witness> -remote <target_name>

#setrcopytarget witness start <target_name>
#setrcopytarget witness start -remote <target_name>

#setrcopytarget witness check <IP of Quorum Witness>
#showrcopy -qw targets

Check the RCopy guide above from page 318 for the correct sequence of commands, you have to wait at a couple of points and look at the status before doing the next commands.

Do the stops, removes then probably use check to make sure you can reach the new IP, then create, look at the status on both ends till they reach not-started, then do the starts and look at status again till both show Started.

Brilliant - thanks again

And just to confirm I don't need to stop the remote copy groups when doing this? Having the QW unavailable for a short time doesn't affect anything on the 3PAR itself?

thanks

No the only thing it affects is the auto failover feature, no need to touch the rcopy groups.
