Post subject:  Reserved User size not reclaimed

Hello,

I am wondering how the reclaim process works on the reserved user Size
I work on VV exported on HPUX 11iv2, and the Used User Size is perfectly reclaimed after cleaning the FS and using a reclaim script on the HPUX.
But the reserved user Size never decrease
In the screenshot attached, the reserved user size is 91% since more than 6 months. (and the used user size roughly the same..

Any idea ?

Thanks ! 8-)

I'd check with support as there are some minimum thresholds per node pair that the array won't reclaim beyond at the LD level in order to preserve performance (wide striping), what those are is dependent on code versions and growth sizes etc.

It looks like you have gone the classic UX route and created lots of small individual volumes striped under a volume manager. It may be that the array just doesn't see enough free space on a per volume basis to bother with the defrag of the reserved space, obviously it has no understanding that these are bound into a single volume at the file system layer.

One way to force the defrag of reserved space is to convert the volume to a FPVV and then back to a TPVV.

Hi, I have exactly the same problem.
The reserved user size is growing more and more.

The used user size comes down by doing the command line
"esxcli -s serverxyz storage vmfs unmap -l 3PAR_VV_LUNxyz"

But the reserved user size comes not down.

I did a "compact CPG" and also a "tune system" and I have no errors and enough free space.

Why does it not shrink / can not be reclaimed ?
Is there no cleaning process ?
Has somebody a solution, for that problem ?

Maybe a one way storage by HP... data just grwoth, never deletes... :D

And, by the way, why are there no automatic storage optimazion tasks - out of the box ?

Thanks a lot
