Post subject:  3PAR HGST CobraF Disk failures

We got the info from HE, that a certain series of disks, that were implemented 1-1,5 year ago worldwide comes to fail and four of our storage boxes are involved.
Of course there is redundancy in the system, so it does not mean data loss, but if the speed of failure is bigger than the replacement, it may cause problems
HPE so many times says that there are hundred/thousand HPE storage boxes impacted all over the world, furthermore this kind of disk (HGST CobraF) is already sold to other storage companies (Dell/EMC, IBM, Hitachi, etc.), too, so they have/will have the same issue as HPE actually already has.
Hitachi? Western Digital? It’s not fully clear. Most probably we are talking about Western Digital’s disks, with Hitachi logo. Anyway, the type is Cobra-F.

Question : Are hundred/thousand HPE storage boxes impacted all over the world ?

We suffer from this.

Hitachi Ultrastar C10K1800 (Cobra-F)
2.5 inch 10k rpm Enterprise Hard Drive
1.8TB, 1.2TB, 900GB, 600GB, 450GB & 300GB

Do you have a copy of the service bulletin, or any way to reference this with HP?

HPe case contradicts the above rumors.

I did ask around my group for any client bulletins pertaining to HGST drives
or service advisories and there are none. The warranty policy is to take each
drive failure as a replacement process with an onsite CE. Under this warranty
HPE is not recommending proactive replacement for drives that have not failed.

From my experience I have replaced few of these type of drives.
Or another way of stating it, almost an equal amount of Seagate
and Hitachi drives have been replaced on my cases.

We replaced about 50 or so of these drives proactively because of the high failure rate.

Can you share a service bulletin number, bug ID, case # or anything that will help customers and HPe employees look this up and research it?

the patch notes for 3.3.1 MU1 obliquely refer to these disks:
http://h20566.www2.hpe.com/hpsc/doc/pub ... 17203en_us

Quote:
A Drive Health Assessment (DHA) utility that enables identification of certain drive models that are at risk
of becoming degraded before they show visible symptoms is transferred to HPE as part of normal data
collection. Drive models that utilize this enhancement are HCBF0600S5xeN010, HCBF1200S5xeN010,
HCBF1200S5xeF010, HCBF1800S5xeN010
