After a few firmware upgrade jumps and licensing upgrade it appears the 3par had zero detect option.

We have good amount of LUNs already setup and exported so would it make sense to global (if its possible) turn on zero detect for all those?

AFAIK 3Par has always had zero detect be l and it's always enabled as it's baked into the ASIC.

Ok let me ask it a different way.....if it's always been there why wouldn't the previous storage admin enabled it for the previous created LUNs ? (Just wondering if there is a negative impact)

Ah, it looks like some time during the life of the T series there was a mention about potential performance issues under heavy load and disabling thin reclaim to avoid it, so if this is a much older system or if someone was reading old documentation that might be it.

In firmware 3.1.1 and older it was available but had to be turned on in advanced settings, when creating the lun (if i remember correctly)
To apply thinning, you'll need to DO the tpvv to a fpvv an back, such that the asic is forced to rethin. Just enabling the zero detect policy will not cleanup zero's that are already written.
