Hello,

I'm pretty new to this very helpful community, this is my first post, and I will try to be very specific about my problem, because HP support is not very accurate.

I'm working for a hosting company, and we've recently bought a 3Par system that is running fine, but I get a warning yesterday about CPG allocated percentage high (98%) remaining 16GB.

Here are the specs :

* HP_3PAR 7200, 3.1.3 MU1
* 1 cage, with dual controllers :
- 8 * 900GB 10K + 4 * 480GB SSD MLC
* 1 cage, attached by SAS to the first cage :
- 8 * 900GB 10K + 4 * 480GB SSD MLC

Each controller is attached by FC to a virtual connect module, in a single HP c7000 enclosure, without any FC fabric. 4 blades are running ESXi 5.5 in a full vmware featured cluster. The 3Par datastores are reachable through a FCoE emulation provided by the virtualconnect modules.

I've created 2 CPG :

1. CPG_R1_FC : Raid1, availibility cage, device type FC, no limit nor warning enabled on growth
2. CPG_R1_SSD : Raid1, availibility cage, device type SSD, no limit nor warning enabled on growth

I've created and exported 6 vv as well :

cli% showvv
----Rsvd(MB)---- -(MB)--
Id Name Prov Type CopyOf BsId Rd -Detailed_State- Adm Snp Usr VSize
1 .srdata full base --- 1 RW normal 0 0 61440 61440
0 admin full base --- 0 RW normal 0 0 10240 10240
12 VV1_THIN_FC tpvv base --- 12 RW normal 256 0 119808 204800
13 VV2_THIN_FC full base --- 13 RW normal 0 0 204800 204800
14 VV3_THIN_SSD tpvv base --- 14 RW normal 384 0 384000 921600
15 VV4_THIN_FC tpvv base --- 15 RW normal 512 0 427904 614400
16 VV5_THIC_FC full base --- 16 RW normal 0 0 2097152 2097152
17 VV6_THIC_SSD tpvv base --- 17 RW normal 512 0 434176 1043456
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
8 total 1664 0 3739520 5157888

The first problem I have, is about the VV6_THIC_SSD. It has been configured to use the CPG_R1_SSD, but the GUI show this volume as FC volume.

The second problem I have is about the CPG usage, both of them are 98% used, and I don't know to free some capacity. I've converted some VV from full to tpvv, I've deleted a 200GB vv as well, and I've compacted both CPG.

Here is the alerte message :
CPG 2 (CPG_R1_SSD) could not grow with its normal grow parameters.-The following parameters were used: createald -wait 0 -cpsd CPG_R1_SSD -t r1 -ha mag -ssz 2 -ss 32 -ch first -p -devtype FC -n tp-2-sd-2 -sz 8192

The HP 3Par management console displays device type SSD for this CPG, this is really strange.

Does somebody here met this kind of issue ?

Cheers, and merry christmas to all.

Ju

Haven't had a detailed look as its getting late, but at a guess you've overrun the SSD capacity and its grown into the FC cpg to avoid an out of space condition, hence the gui showing it as FC. What that means Is the CPG is spamning SSD and FC disks. Really SSD should be configured for Raid 5 there's little performance benefit on raid 1 unless your really pushing it and lots of capacity overhead. Try a compact CPG to release some space immediately failing that an unmap may free space within the Vv's, but it looks like you'll need dynamic optimization or a tunesys to retune the volumes once you've released the space, you can also use this to convert SSD to raid5 but crucially you need to find some space. DO is the best method as you can deal with a volume at a time, maybe tune to FC release space then back tp SSD.

Thanks for your help JohnMH, I found a workaround, for 6 volumes :

"esxcli storage vmfs unmap -l volume_name"
